How to Make a Cooling Tonic for Oily Scalp

Having an oily scalp is not only embarrassing, it means you have unhealthy hair and may have dandruff. You're not alone, though; oily scalp is a problem many people face. Changes in hygiene habits, shampoos and even your environment can affect the condition of your scalp. Use a tonic recipe to alleviate your oily scalp in the comfort and privacy of your own home.

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2 cup mouthwash
  • 1/2 witch hazel
  • 2 tbsp. lemon juice
  1. Combine the ingredients in a small plastic bottle.
  2. Shampoo your hair normally and rinse well. Use a very mild shampoo (like baby shampoo) that doesn't strip your hair of natural oils.
  3. Squeeze the tonic onto your wet hair and scalp. Work in sections to ensure even application.\
  4. Leave the tonic on for 5 minutes and rinse well with warm water.

Tips & Warnings

  • When rinsing the tonic, don't use hot water; it activates the sebaceous glands and produces oil.
  • Use this tonic at least once a month to keep your hair and scalp healthy.
  • Stay away from shampoos designed to treat oily hair, as stripping the oil does not stop the problem; it actually triggers your scalp to produce even more oil.
