Ionic Hair Treatment

For those with frizzy or coarse hair, ionic hair treatments may be used to improve the hair's texture. Whether delivered via hair dryer or other styling tools, ionic hair products use chemistry principles to alter the hair's texture.

How It Works

Hair that is undamaged is evenly charged with both positive and negative ions. However, damage, such as that due to heat styling or over processing, can cause the hair to have a positive charge. Ionic hair treatments work to re-establish balance in the hair by emitting negative ions. When the negative ions interact with the positives, the hair becomes smooth and shiny in appearance.

Ionic Hair Dryer

An ionic hair dryer is often one of the first tools used on the hair to restore ion balance. The hair dryer delivers charged ions through the air, which works to break down water molecules while instilling negatively charged ions into the hair. This means that most ionic hair dryers may reduce hair drying time while also leaving the hair feeling smoother.

While ionic hair dryers can be pricier than their non-ionic counterparts, they are often one of the most beneficial products in terms of ionic hair treatments (www.bodiesbydesign.com).

Additional Styling Tools

A variety of ionic styling products, such as creams and gels, as well as straightening and curling irons, are available to neutralize ions. While using more than one of an ionic hair tool/styling product will not deter the ionic treatment's effects, typically one tool or product is sufficient to deliver positive effects. Typically it is best to choose the method that reaches the most hair to make it soft and shiny all over the head, not just to where the cream or styling tool is applied.
